Introduction. The American Psychologist Association (APA) defines psychology as ‘the study of the mind and behaviour . The discipline embraces all aspects of the human experience — from the functions of the brain to the actions of nations, from child development to care for the aged. ‘(Association, 2014). With such an extensive definition, it is not overly surprising that its scientific kudos has been used to propagate political dogma, including abominable beliefs such as the innate inferiority of black people (Howitt and Owusu-Bempah, 1994) and to facilitate the legalislation of racist laws such as the American Jim Crow laws that placed severe restrictions on the rights and privileges of African Americans in 1877 (Brown and Stentiford,†¦show more content†¦They have psychological needs. For example, deprive them of acceptance and their development is likely to warp. This is the truth underlying anthropologist Ronald Rohner’s classic work on rejection. Minority groups ranked at the bottom when being considered for a job or school. Minority groups were not treated the same as the average population in many organizations and society. Two acts have been imposed to stop the discrimination of these minorities. The imposed acts are known as Affirmative Action and the Americans with Disability Act (ADA). This paper defines both imposed acts, past to present. Affirmative Action The Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy defines Affirmative Action as â€Å"positive steps taken to increase the representation of women and minorities in areas of employment, education, and business from which they have been historically excluded. When those steps involve preferential selection—selection on the basis of race, gender, or ethnicity—affirmative action generates intense controversy. † (Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy, 2001) The history Affirmative Action has a long history. It was first used in the 1960’s in the Civil Rights Act. In 1965 the President ordered Affirmative Action to be applied to federal contractors (Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy, 2001). Imposing Affirmative Action resulted in organization creating quotas. Quotas are known as a â€Å"plan† to allow a specific amount of individuals per minority to be hired or utilized. Due to these quotas, Affirmative Action wasn’t working as expected. It was later determined, quotas are not applicable and defeat the purpose of Affirmative Action. The purpose Affirmative Action has a main purpose to create fairness between minorities and the larger populations. Affirmative Action mandates organizations, schools, and government to consider minority individuals without bias to minority. Minority individuals must receive the same treatment and opportunity as any other individual, who is not in a minority population. Controversy As with many other acts and laws, controversy follows Affirmative Action. Despite the purpose of Affirmative Action, individuals often argue the contents of the action are unconstitutional. Some organization set plans for Affirmative Action and controversy often follows. Many organizations still manage to have quotas, which cause controversy. Controversy seems to be unlimited when concerning Affirmative Action. Affirmative Action may need to be strict to stop controversy, if possible. American Disability Act â€Å"Title I of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 prohibits private employers, state and local governments, employment agencies and labor unions from discriminating against qualified individuals with disabilities in job application procedures, hiring, firing, advancement, compensation, job training, and other terms, conditions, and privileges of employment. (U. S. Equal Opportunity Commission, 2008) â€Å"The ADA covers employers with 15 or more employees, including state and local governments. It also applies to employment agencies and to labor organizations. The ADA’s nondiscrimination standards also apply to federal sector employees under section 501 of the Rehabilitation Act, as amended, and its implementing rules. † (U. S. Equal Opportunity Commission, 2008) ADA defines disabilities The Americans with Disabilities Act defines an disabled individual in by three factors. These factors include: * Mental or physical impairment which hinders an individuals’ ability to perform one or more â€Å"major life activities† (U. S. Equal Opportunity Commission, 2008) * Has been diagnosed as having the impairment described * Has been regarded as having the impairment described Organization requirements The Americans with Disability Act requires organizations to follow specific guidelines to be compliant with ADA. Besides, giving disabled individuals equal opportunity to employment and education, the organizations must be functional for disabled. The organizations facility must be accessible. Schedules and work tools may need to be modified to fit disabled individuals. â€Å"An employer is required to make a reasonable accommodation to the known disability of a qualified applicant or employee if it would not impose anâ€Å"undue hardship† on the operation of the employer’s business. Reasonable accommodations are adjustments or modifications provided by an employer to enable people with disabilities to enjoy equal employment opportunities. Accommodations vary depending upon the needs of the individual applicant or employee. † (U. S. Minority groups have been treated poorly in the past. Although mistreatment of minority individual still occurs, specific acts imposed by the government have decreased the statistics. Group Dynamics Managing Organizational Behaviour

Question: Discuss about the Group Dynamics for Managing Organizational Behaviour. Answer: Introduction: In the following incident, I am sharing an experience when I was recently appointed as the Human resource Assistant HR in the company HR international group of consultant, the incident took place two years ago and caused the work place and the group dynamics to change. Over a coffee, The HR manager of the company, Mark, in the boardroom shared a vision of how and what the organization is suppose to look like in the future and explained everyone about the idea to flourish the working of the organization and the work each one was suppose to perform. Mark was supportive and motivated the team in every perspective. The company had recruited the assistant HR and Interns in which there were five new employees including me, we were explained about the work, comforted and motivated by Mark. Out of the employees recruited one of them was Sharen, from the very beginning I was keen and focused and did really well in the work I opted, whereas Sharen seemed to be jealous of my performance and did not like the appreciation I usually received. (Adler, Gundersen, 2008) Few days later we were assigned a group assignment in which Sharen was made to be the group leader, she divided the work to each of us, but due to her jealousy towards me she was not thinking as a group leader and was in a thought of how to bring my perform down. Sharen started portraying my negative image to the rest of the employees, this in turn brought a misconception in the group and the group did not feel motivated and was mislead by the group leader. The groups functioning was affected due to the less interaction and the forces operating between Sharen and me within the group, the structure and processes of the group lead the group dynamic issues. (Robbins, 2010) The result of the assignment proved to be poor and the team suffered, communication had been the major problem and this situation caused a lot of issues and problems for employee, this also affected the performance and lead to job dissatisfaction, later due to the poor result the manager Mark who was a good team leader, a motivator and a good communicator with an experience of many years of working with so many employees of this type went through the work done by the employees and analyzed the problem that Sharen was misleading the group, and called for a meeting and discussed the issues. The employees realized that it is very essential to have a good team leader and a communicator for a proper functioning of the group. Essay writing The motivation vary between individuals, it is the high level of effort towards the goals of the organization with the amount of effort used with the ability to satisfy the needs of an individual. Motivating the employees at the workplace gives a positive result in the overall performance and job satisfaction of the individual along with meeting the organizational goals. There are basically two main theories of motivation, the early theories of motivation: content theory and the process theories of motivation. The early theories, these are four theories, Maslaws hierarchy of needs theory, Alderfers ERG theory, McClellands acquired needs theory and the Herzbergs two factor theory. The process theories have the Equity theory and the Expectancy theory. The two theories relevant to the scenario are the McClellands theory from the early theories of motivation and the equity theory from the process theories of motivation. There have been a number of problems that was being faced in the scenario because of the misconduct of the team leader, there was total lack of motivation within the group and the managing of the team leader with its members did not go on very well as they had issues regarding each other, Sharen the team leader had been dissatisfied by the appraisal of the other employees and always wanted to be at the top most, the scenario reflects the urge of competition that Sharen had within her but instead of paying more concern to her own performance she thought of degrading the performance of others and unknowing started bringing a negative vibe between the members of the group she lead by portraying a negative image of her colleague (Ching, 2015). The problems of lack of motivation that Sharen had can be analyzed by the McCl ellands acquired theory and the equity theory as she had high achievement, affiliation and the power she had. Sharen used the institutional power provided to her as personal power which proved to be undesirable. Sharen always compared her work with other employees work and always compared her own effort with others appraisal loosing her motivation. The issues lead to effect the overall performance when Sharen the group leader did not do her job well and there was a down fall in the result with poor performance by all the individual members due to her personal issues with the employee she thought of not letting that employee perform well and would be responsible for the result that would take place but this in turn had affected the others too, a proper assessment was required for the motivation of all by Sharen (Thomas, 2009). The group dynamics has two parts in it, the group and the team, the group in the group dynamics focuses on the overall development of the group and acknowledge the results and evaluate the reasons for the individuals as per why they should be a part of that group, what stages of development, the competitions and intergroup development are required, the team building is the group of people working of a common, specific goal and purposes building with high performance is very much essential for the proper group leader to perform, the group leader should have the proper functioning of the group and the team he or she is leading, Sharen proved to be unsuccessful and did not come up being a good team leader as she lacked the ways of leading the group towards a shared goal. Sharen could not expand the team capabilities and implement the changes in the group, when she being the leader herself did not communicate well and also did not focus on the development of the group to attain the resul t in a positive way, the scenario clearly explains the problems that lead to the issues to the group dynamics, there was continuous conflict between the leader and the employee, Sharen did not build high performance team and herself made misconceptions between the members by bringing a negative impact and image about the employee as she did not want that the employee should perform well and should be responsible for the result. The manager who had been very supportive and had managed the employees with high motivation and communication had analyzed the situations and later took steps to discuss the situation with the team. The group dynamic had been affected and the result proved to be poor and the behavior of the group leader was unpleasant and misleading the members. There were issues regarding the role of the leader, Sharen being the leader instead of leading the group to the right direction brought about issues which she felt would satisfy her personal problem with the employee and indeed made a number of problems. The high performance requirement could make Sharen prove herself as a good team leader if she had focused and interacted well with each individual in the group, Sharen as a team leader could prove her abilities and would achieve a great performance appraisal if she had focused on the team building and her duties (Marcus, 2013). Sharing information helps the individuals to articulate the real meaning and make a flow of exchanging the ideas and information, a good communicator should also be a good listener, active listening also helps in active response without much difficulties, communication leads to a better understanding and results in the a positive analysis of the situation. The ideas when expressed freely will be always beneficial and will always help to analyze the importance to follow the ways and lead the situation well. The communication is the interchange of information, it is essential for survival in every perspective of life, the communication in the organization is the way of expressing the ideas and ways to inform each other regarding the work to be done or the requirements, a good communication skill is very essential and is required to flourish the organization or any group with a proper functioning, the communication gap leads serious issues within the organization and also between the me mbers who are the part of that group, it is very essential for a team leader to be a good communicator and adviser, the communication also means the sending and receiving of the information or exchange of messages through proper means. In the scenario stated above the communication was a major issue that had changed the overall misleading of the group, the leader did not communicate well with the members and due to the lack of exchange of information within the group the result had been poor and the performance of the overall group was affected. The exchange of information between the employee and Sharen was not proper and due to which, the employee misunderstood and mislead the work to be done (Satell, 2015). The communication plays a very important role and also it has many barriers, Sharen had a closed mindedness and highly dogmatic as she was found to be difficult with opening up to information she had and also a poor communicator and because of which she was an ineffective manager. The barriers to communications can be minimized but in the Scenario it is very clear that Sharen did not want to communicate well as she did not want the employee to do well and give a good performance, if the two would have communicated well and worked with focus, the problems and issues would have been resolved and the mindset of Sharen could have changed, bringing a good result with positive feedback for performance of all the members. Sharen should be motivated by the manger even more and should be given opportunities to prove herself with proper guidance about the problems that can let her performance down, she should be made to work on some different projects other than the other employees and should be praised for her performance, as motivating the employees at work gives a good positive result and also improves the performance and build confidence in managing the work well with a lot of positive attitude and perception towards the other employee in the organization. Actions taken to improve group dynamics. The group dynamics can be improved by building a team with skills that would be essentially important to the overall performance of the group; the group members so chosen should be well informed at their work and should have a clear idea about the task. The development of the group should be at the priority so that the group members gain skillful learning and understanding between them. The intergroup development and working as team is the most important factor that helps the group to perform well with building high performance (Davis, 2014). Actions taken to improve the communication. The action taken to improve communication of the employees helps to the organization to work with a great ease. The group communication with the members and the leaders was the main problem in the above scenario. The leader Sharen did not communicate well because of her closed mindedness. The communications can be improved by providing the appropriate use of minimizing the communication barriers between the two and also making Sharen realize the issues that took place because of her misleading communication and the misconduct. The Western Lowland Gorilla: The Western Lowland Gorilla: A comparison with humans and a critique of methods of study. By Fokren Masters For thousands of years, men and women have strived to explain the why of their existence. To discover the reasons for how we act the way we do and what this knowledge can do to impact the way we live our lives in this complex society that we have created. One of the ways that science has begun to shed light on the inner workings of the human condition is through Primatology. Built from the words Primate which refers to a group of animals closely related to humans and logos which is a Greek word meaning ?the study of' Primatology's goals include more than simply to amass data on the primate species. Rather a Primatologist observes data about primates in an effort to understand the primate species under their study and to relate that data back to the human condition so that we can learn more about ourselves through our evolutionary cousins. In recent years, Primatologists have done much research on all aspects of the life of the western lowland Gorilla, known scientifically as: gorilla gorilla gorilla (Fay, 1989). In this paper I will compare these primates, more precisely classified as great apes, to humans in an attempt to illuminate both differences and similarities between the two species. More specifically, I will focus on the social structure of the western lowland Gorilla, describing how these predominantly gentle creatures live in a society similar to that of humans in many ways. Finally, in my conclusion I will explore the methods that Primatologists use to study primates such as the western lowland Gorilla and whether those methods are biased towards or against the Gorillas. However, I cannot draw indelible conclusions about these subjects as I have had no time studying these animals in the field and have only the observations and writings of others from which to draw my data and form opinions. The most common of the Gorilla species, there are approximately ten thousand to thirty five thousand western lowland Gorillas in the wild and five hundred and fifty individuals in captivity worldwide. They are found in Nigeria, Cameroon, Gabon, Congo, Central African Republic and Zaire in increasingly shrinking habitats due to the incessant encroachment of human populations. Western lowland gorillas are covered with black or brown-gray fur with black skin on chests, palms, and faces. Red heads are common in Camaroon gorillas especially. Males develop a silver back as they mature this is not unlike the tendency for many human males to develop gray hair as they mature as well. The main difference being that only Gorilla males develop silver backs whereas in humans both males and females alike tend to lose their hair coloring with age. Unlike humans, which are bipedal, walking on two legs, Gorillas are quadrupedal, they walk on all fours with the soles of their feet flat on the ground with the knuckles of the hands curled and planted on the ground (Schaller, 1963). Although they are mainly quadrupedal, gorillas can travel bipedally but generally no farther than approximately six meters (Schaller, 1963). This upright stance is used most often used for chest beating, to observe something of interest, or to reach an object (Schaller, 1963). Gorillas recognize each other by their faces and body shapes. Each gorilla has a unique nose print which researchers can use to identify animals in the field (Schaller, 1963). This is very much like humans who recognize each other almost exclusively by visual identification of the facial features. Gorillas sleep about 13 hours each night and rest for several hours at midday. They build new sleeping nests every night by bending nearby plants into a springy platform, usually on the ground or in low trees. When not resting, they spend most of their time looking for food and eating it. Despite their fearsome size (three hundred to five hundred pounds for males and one hundred fifty to two hundred fifty pounds for females) and large canine teeth the western lowland gorilla is an herbivore. The 12 Best Journalism Schools SAT / ACT Prep Online Guides and Tips When you have a niche interest like journalism, it can be difficult to find reliable information on the strength of undergraduate programs. To help you get your college search going, we’ve rounded up a list of the best journalism schools out there for aspiring writers, editors, and reporters. Ranking Criteria for Top Journalism Schools College ranking lists can be really helpful if you’re just starting your college search- they’re great if you want to get a general idea of what schools are out there and whether they fit your interests and criteria. The danger comes with using them as the be-all, end-all source of info about college quality- ranking organizations all use different methods for coming up with these lists, and they’re not always transparent about the process. Although this ranking list should also just be used as a jumping-off point, I want to be much more transparent about the process used to compile this list of best journalism schools. First, I started by searching for colleges and universities that have a dedicated journalism major for undergraduates. After that, I took these major criteria into account: School Reputation- Journalism has grown increasingly interdisciplinary as communications and media have changed with technological advances. It’s important that undergraduate students have access to other strong departments within the school as well, so I considered the general reputation of the school when compiling this list. Graduate School Reputation- Although I only listed schools here if they had a dedicated undergraduate program, schools got points if they had a well-regarded graduate department in journalism or communications. Undergraduate students studying journalism will often benefit from faculty and resources from the graduate program. Career Preparation- Journalism is a field where it’s super important to get plenty of hands-on experience before jumping into a career. I looked for schools where students were getting plenty of prep working in the field (e.g. internship opportunities at local or national newspapers or news stations). Class Options- A reputation for providing a strong foundational knowledge is important, but interesting, unique classes are definitely a plus. Journalism classes in more niche subject areas may also signal a creative faculty with greater resources to spare. Alumni- When departments have many notable alumni, that signals a strong alumni network and a strong journalism program. This boosts the reputation of the school and may help out when you’re starting to look for jobs. The Best Journalism Schools The caveats I listed for ranking lists above continue to apply here: although this list was compiled in a transparent (albeit unscientific) way, you should use it primarily as a jumping-off point for your own research. I encourage you to focus less on the strict order of rankings (which is pretty subjective to begin with) and more on the individual characteristics of each school. #1: Northwestern University Journalism is one of the most popular majors at Northwestern, and for good reason. There are many programs in place to ensure that students are well-prepared for careers as journalists. Some of these programs include: The Journalism Residency Program- Students spend time working as reporters or public relations specialists at media outlets across the country (and sometimes even internationally). The Media on the Hill Program- Students serve as mobile journalists and quickly update info on events in DC. Medill Justice Program- Students examine potentially wrongful convictions and look into criminal justice issues. Special courses offered through the school include interesting electives like â€Å"The Googlization of America† and â€Å"Journalism in a Networked World.† Finally, Northwestern hosts one of the top graduate journalism programs in the country in addition to an awesome creative writing program. #2: University of Missouri- Columbia (Mizzou) Mizzou is a large public university that’s well known for its undergraduate and graduate journalism programs. There are over 30 different interest areas (i.e. concentrations) available to undergraduate journalism students, including ones like â€Å"Entrepreneurial Journalism† and â€Å"Magazine Publishing and Management.† If none of the existing interest areas meet your needs, you have the option to design your own. Hands-on opportunities in real-media labs are available to students in each interest area. There are also quite a few relevant student groups on campus, including ones like the Association for Women in Sports Media and the Student Society of News Design. #3: Boston University BU is a well-ranked school in a bustling college town- the area around the school (never mind the school itself) comes with a lot of opportunity. The school itself- which has produced 24 Pulitzer Prize winners- combines a liberal arts background with plenty of pre-professional training in the field. Undergrads have many different focus areas to choose from, including Online Journalism and Magazine Journalism. Students often intern at prestigious Boston-area news organizations like the Boston Globe. Finally, BU boasts a strong journalism master's program, which indicates access to plenty of awesome faculty and other resources. Living in a hub like Boston opens up a lot of professional opportunities. #4: Syracuse University One of the best universities in upstate NY, Syracuse offers eight different undergrad programs in journalism and communications, including Broadcast Digital Journalism and Newspaper Online Journalism. The school maintains several industry partnerships with major communications companies, leading to professional/networking opportunities. Special programs include the SULA Semester (Syracuse University Los Angeles), where students spend a summer living and working in LA. #5: UT Austin Journalism is a popular major at UT Austin, but there are also many helpful supporting departments, including Communication Media Studies and Digital Communication. Journalism at UT Austin- which boasts 18 Pulitzer Prize winning alumni- emphasizes digital skills training for all its students. The school's Specialty Communications Career Services Center helps journalism students find internships and jobs. There are also many relevant student groups on campus, including University of Texas Hispanic Journalists and ORANGE Magazine (UT’s student magazine). #6: NYU NYU is a highly-ranked school in general (with a highly-ranked creative writing program to boot). Journalism students at NYU choose between two undergraduate tracks: Journalism and Media Criticism. Both programs focus on professional ethics, the cultural politics of media, the social role of the journalist, and the importance of craft. Students are required to double-major in one additional field of study. This is great if you want a more liberal arts spin to your education, but not so great if you’re sure you just want to focus on journalism. New York City is a great place to study journalism- there are so many prestigious media outlets with headquarters there- but if you have international ambitions, you might be interested in NYU's Journalism Abroad Program: students study and work in Ghana, Czech Republic, China, and England. #7: Arizona State University ASU is a huge public university in a large city with a lot of opportunity for hands-on experience. The Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication offers three bachelor's degree options: Journalism and Mass Communication, Mass Communication and Media Studies, and Sports Journalism. Students get training in live newsrooms under professional journalists. ASU’s PBS station- which reaches 1.9 million households- is also used as a teaching tool for students at the journalism school. At such a large school you'll be sure to find an equally large selection of student groups. Some relevant groups include the Fashion Journalists Club, the National Association of Black Journalists, and the Cronkite Cut. Phoenix is more of a metropolis than you might realize- and the area comes with some extra perks. #8: American University American University is located in DC, a perfect spot for aspiring journalists to get work experience (especially if you're interested in politics). In addition to the standard bachelor's degree program, American offers a unique joint BA/MA program. Undergraduate students choose from one of two tracks: Broadcast or Print Journalism. Investigative journalism workshops and practicums are an important part of the program. Other programs offered at the school include communication studies, film media arts, and public communication- all disciplines that play well with journalism. #9: Emerson College Emerson is located in Boston, just blocks from the state house. The program really strives to be proactive in embracing technological advances in the field- it adopted a new multimedia curriculum in 2011. Aside from journalism, other popular majors at Emerson include film, marketing, and digital communication. The college boasts several award-winning on-campus media outlets (including newspapers and radio stations). There is a wide array of interesting student groups, including Captured Emotion (dedicated to documentary and nonfiction work), spec (a group dedicated to the art of screenwriting), and Wax on Felt (a student record company). #10: Ohio University Ohio University offers its students a combination of a liberal arts + professional degree. Its mission statement says the school is committed to providing an education in professional ethics, critical thinking, and responsibility. There's a strong emphasis on the importance of media training while studying journalism. Student media groups on campus include The Post (a daily newspaper), Backdrop (a lifestyle magazine), and the interActvist (a progressive magazine). Bonus Schools These schools didn't meet the criteria to make the list above, but they still make great options for students who are interested in entering the field. Just because they didn't make the official list doesn't mean these schools aren't great places for aspiring journalists! UCLA UCLA doesn’t offer a dedicated undergraduate journalism degree- instead, undergrads can major in â€Å"Communication Studies,† which is much more broad (but still very applicable). Students can take courses in up to 12 different departments. The Communications Studies curriculum includes hands-on field study courses for students' junior and senior years which sounds like a great way to get relevant experience. Columbia Columbia also doesn't have an undergrad journalism major, but you are able to take courses through their top-rated graduate program. Since it's in New York, it comes with the same location advantages of NYU- not to mention that it's a top-ranked Ivy League school with a great creative writing program. How to Choose the Right School Like I mentioned earlier, the rank itself will matter less than whether the school offers everything you’re looking for in a journalism program. Follow these tips to figure out which of the best journalism schools listed above might be the best match for you. Check Out the Curriculum If you have special interests (or even if you don’t), you’ll want to check out the core classes and the available electives for each program. Different schools may also offer various concentrations or tracks within their journalism degree program- if that’s the case, explore those different options. You don’t have to get excited about each and every course (especially when it comes to foundational or required courses), but you want to look for a school whose curriculum is aligned with your own interests. Learn More About Relevant Student Groups When pursuing a degree in journalism, it’s super important to get professional experience as a student- this will help prepare you for your job search. Is there a specific type of media that you’re very excited to work in outside of your classes? Is there a particular subject you’re passionate about working on? Student-run media is the place to do this. Some of these schools have more limited student media options than others. This may not be a problem if a program already has a group you’re interested in, but if not, you might want to check out other programs. Do Your Research on the Faculty The people who will actually be teaching you will make a huge difference in how much you get out of your education. Check out the type of work that they do- many top profs in journalism programs have achieved some serious professional success. You may also want to check out their ratings on ratemyprofessor.com, but remember that students are less likely to leave reviews if they’re generally satisfied with the instructor- you get sort of a skewed perspective with the site, as you do with any ratings platform. Think More About the School in General A journalism program is (usually) only a part of whatever school you attend- your overall experience will also depend on the school more generally. What’s the student body like? Where is the school located? What’s the housing situation? If you aren’t happy with these (very important) aspects of student life at a school, chances are you won’t be happy in the journalism program.
